Technologically and biologically influenced mutation and infection affect all arthropods–and some other creatures– differently. An order, family, genus, or species may branch off into several different new varieties. This is exactly what happened with the portion of the Lepidoptera order (the order of winged insects that includes butterflies and moths). Many a lepidopteran descendant walks among Bug-kin like any other. On the other hand, their now-distant cousins, known as wisps, flit about causing chaos and mischief.
Many wisps have an innate ability to sense and track down crystalline structures. Treasure hunters and truth seekers will often try to capture or follow a wisp for their chance at a payday, only to be thwarted by one thing a wisp does better than anything else: be distracting as all hell.
Just as they are attracted to crystals, wisps also have an affinity for titan-kin, the ancient giants who have seen the world change over hundreds of years. Rumour has it that isps are one of the few creatures that can wake a titan from its slumber, but no one knows if it's due to a relationship they have, some special ability, or because they annoy titans like they do so many others.
Wisps are small, dusty creatures that vibrate and move at speeds similar to hummingbirds. Their bodies and wings are hard to perceive while on the move, and they are always on the move. They can be heard coming by the buzz of their wings, laughter, and random rhetorical musings.
What makes wisps resistant to infection is believed to be related to the dust covering their wings. For this reason, many attempt to collect wisp dust.
